“On the Brink in Brownsville” for The New York Times Magazine

In this feature I tell the story of a 15-year-old boy named Shamir and his summer jaunts around the streets and playgrounds of Brownsville, Brooklyn, one of the poorest, most dangerous and heavily policed neighborhoods in New York. The story follows Shamir as he tries to alleviate boredom amid chaos in his neighborhood. I hung out with Shamir and his friends as they shared their dreams, when they found joy in each other’s company, and when they lost themselves in violence.
